Another outstanding sherried The Glenrothes Vintage 1978 bottling, this time from 1978. Bottled in 2008, this was rated at 90.5 points in the Whisky Bible by Jim Murray, who found gooseberries, tobacco, honey, sultanas and vanilla pods amongst its many charms.
Glenrothes Distillery Description
Truly a 1970’s classic, The Glenrothes Vintage 1978 is an outstanding vintage bottling. Distilled in 1978 and bottled in 2008. Glenrothes has always been universally acclaimed by blenders as an exceptional Speyside Malt. Each vintage is rare and has its own unique personality.
The Glenrothes Vintage 1978 is most likely the very last Glenrothes from the 1970s, comprised of a small selection of casks, hand-picked by John Ramsay, Malt Master. Each of these casks were chosen at their pinnacle of maturity.
This well-aged Glenrothes single malt was distilled back in February 1978, and left to rest for two decades. It was then bottled in 1999 as a restricted release (like what it says on the label!), with the tasting notes on the bottle suggesting notes of blackberry and vanilla.

Whiskey Advocate
Due to Scotland’s steady, temperate climate, the ABV of whiskies aging there will decline over time, meaning these older stocks need to be closely monitored lest they dip below 40% and can no longer legally be considered whisky. In the case of this single cask, master whisky maker Gordon Motion determined the profile to be so special so that it warranted a special release. Pushing this cask further toward 40 years could have resulted in a change in both ABV and flavor that may have required it to be used as part of a wider vatting.
