Cappellano Otin Fiorin Pie Franco Barolo is what Teobaldo affectionately called a “backwards evolution”—a bold return to the roots of true Barolo and the pursuit of purity. This extraordinary wine also serves as a heartfelt tribute to his grandfather Giovanni, who spent his later years in Africa exploring whether the shift to grafted vines was inevitable, and searching for natural resistance to the devastating Phylloxera parasite. Many predicted failure, convinced that the ungrafted vines would perish—but against all odds, those very rows remain, thriving and vibrant, standing as a proud testament to courage and vision. The result of this audacious legacy is a Barolo that’s anything but ordinary—seductive, complex, and intensely expressive. It radiates the authentic character of the Serralunga terroir, free from pretension or artifice. Enjoy it with rich dishes like braised short ribs, truffle risotto, or wild boar ragu to fully savor its bold, soulful charm.
The 2016 Barolo Piè Franco is every bit as impressive as it was last year. What a wine! Rich, powerful and explosive, the 2016 possesses unreal depth and stature to burn. Once again, I am so impressed with the wine's presence. The Franco is usually ethereal and fleeting, but not here. The 2016 is a bold wine that demands attention. Dark red fruit, sage, iron, leather, licorice and rose petal open with a bit of coaxing. Readers who can find the 2016 are in for a real treat. It is without question one of the wines of the vintage.
