The legendary red wine of the wine region. This ruby red, spicy, and noble red wine is blended of Kekfrankos, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zewigelt wines. The harmony of the components is developed by oak ageing in the famous cellars of Eger which are carved in tuff. Best with Hungarian dishes and spicy games.
Egri Bikav?r ("Bull's Blood of Eger") is Hungary's most famous red wine. It comes from the Eger wine region of northern Hungary; the Szeksz?rd region produces a similar wine with similar name (Szeksz?rdi Bikav?r) but with different character.
Egri Bikav?r is a blend that has varied over the years, although the blend is anchored by the ancient Kadarka variety. Kadarka is believed to have arrived during the Turkish invasion of the 16th century, either by the Turks themselves or by Serbs displaced by them. It is a difficult grape to vinify, and has increasingly been replaced by Blaufr?nkisch, known locally as K?kfrankos.
Officially Egri Bikav?r must contain at least three of the following 13 grapes: Kadarka, K?kfrankos (or Blaufr?nkisch in German), Blauer Portugieser (K?koport?), Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Menoire (known as K?kmedoc, or M?doc Noir before), Pinot Noir, Syrah, Tur?n, B?borkadarka and the modern Austrian hybrids, Blauburger and Zweigelt.
