Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Bonina Langhe Freisa, a distinguished red from Italy's Piedmont region, returns to tradition. Hand-harvested in the Bonina vineyard, south of Alba, this organic-practicing Freisa thrives in marl limestone soil. Fermented in stainless steel with a 10-day maceration, it's aged in old Slavonian wood casks for a time-honored finish.

The 2022 Freisa Bonina is a gorgeous, super-expressive wine. Rose petal, pine, dried herbs, crushed red berry fruit and orange peel are some of the many notes that open in the glass. I especially admire the energy and nuance here. Firm tannins will need a bit of time to soften, but this is quite promising.
